Our Quasi-Mission Statement The guiding motivation behind Vegan Street is a strong belief in the ability of activists to successfully spread the message of veganism - of compassion, strength and awareness - by adopting a position of power. Historically, those of us involved in social justice movements have been assigned and have willingly assumed the position of victim. As long as we continue on this well-trodden path, whether tearfully pleading our case, or, on the other end of the spectrum but no less a victim still, bellowing our list of demands, we will not likely achieve that which is necessary for our message to be resoundingly heard. What is necessary is a shift in public consciousness. At Vegan Street, we believe that this profound transformation will only take place when we as activists open our minds and hearts enough to allow a shift in consciousness as well, that from victim to victor. A first step is to acknowledge that we are powerful; that we have knowledge, commitment and numbers. If we predicate all of our work as activists on this basic but unshakable understanding, we will be beyond defeat and a new paradigm can be established. At the foundation of Vegan Street is the conviction that if others are to accept our ideas, it is necessary for us first to accept our own strength. To this end, we take it as a given that our message is important, compelling and worthy of attention. Our hope for this web site is that visitors will be encouraged to embrace veganism because of its incredible potential for positive change. All of our website, from our merchandise to our activist calendar, is designed with this in mind. We also hope that the Vegan Street site may help give strength to our friends who are already involved in the movement. If we can lend any support to the activist community, then we have been successful. One last thing...There is so much sadness and resistance animal rights activists confront daily, and at times it may seem insurmountable. This is acknowledged. However, there is also a lot of beauty, triumph and cause for celebration that is too often ignored or overlooked altogether. All of us need to pay as much attention to the joyful moments as much as we do the painful ones if we are to continue working on the behalf of animals. As much as anger and sadness are honest emotions, so is happiness. At Vegan Street our goal is that together, as an ever-growing collective of educators, activists and visionaries, we can build a community that spans the globe; we will create roads of compassion, fields of creativity and oceans of hope.
