ConAgra Lightens Up
ConAgra, North America's largest food-service manufacturer, announced
on July 17 that it had purchased all of Lightlife Food's assets.
Lightlife is a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of
refrigerated vegetarian and soy products, including Smart Dogs,
Smart Deli slices, Gimme Lean and Lightburgers. In addition to
soy products, they also sell tempeh and seitan-based products.
"We are increasing our focus in this area because of consumer
demand for healthful vegetable-based products," said Bruce Rohde,
ConAgra chairman and CEO. "The Lightlife acquisition is evidence
of our commitment to serve the growing number of consumers who
are looking for natural foods in their diets."
Michael Cohen, Lightlife CEO and a co-founder of the company said,
"ConAgra is the right fit since the company has broad resources
to realize greater opportunities."
No doubt driving ConAgra's acquisition of Lightlife was the October
1999 decision of the FDA to allow a health claim on products that
contain at least 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving. The health
claim notes that 25 grams of soy protein a day, in conjunction
with a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the
risk of heart disease.
ConAgra also owns Advantage 10, a full line of vegetarian foods
that is endorsed by Dean Ornish, M.D. |
