Greenpeace blocks cargo ship with suspect soybeans

Environmental activist group Greenpeace blocked a U.S. cargo ship trying to enter port in Ghent, Belguim on December 4, claiming it carried genetically engineered soybeans. Greenpeace activists blocked the entrance to the canal, displaying a huge banner that said, "GMO - Europe Says No."

"Europeans are being force-fed with genetically engineered animal products by multinational grain traders," Greenpeace said in a statement.

The European Union is considering strict new rules over the use of genetically modified materials. Measures include more stringent labeling and monitoring of biotech foods, feeds, seeds and pharmaceutical products as well as a ban on antibiotic-resistant genes and a public registry to track genetically engineered food origins.
