Ooh-Mah-Nee Farm Sanctuary Rescues 3,500 Factory Farm Chickens

The largest farmed animal rescue ever was recently orchestrated by the good folks at Ooh-Mah-Nee Farm, a sanctuary for farm animals located on 100 acres in western Pennsylvania.

Their heroic rescue of over 3000 egg-laying hens came about after Ooh-Mah-Nee Farm received a fax from the Humane Society of the United States that alerted them to a horrible situation in Crofton, OH, where a tornado had struck Buckeye Egg Farm. Buckeye, which is one of the largest of the factory-style egg producers in the nation, had 12 of its 150 massive laying warehouses damaged by the tornado, which left thousands of hens in severe peril. Mechanized watering and feeding systems, the primary method of animal care in industrial agriculture, were disabled by the tornado, and the hens ran the risk of suffering greatly.

Ooh-Mah-Nee Farm staffers contacted the director of Buckeye Egg Farm, Steven Wagner, and asked if they could rescue as many of the hens as possible. Mr. Wagner stated that a "clean up" program was already initiated, and that hens were either being rendered, or they were being "humanely" gassed in large dumpsters.

Finding this grossly unacceptable, Ooh-Mah-Nee workers showed up the very next day at Buckeye Farm unannounced and ready to work. Buckeye representatives tried to kick them off the property until they were informed of the bad publicity this would likely generate. Buckeye had already had its share of bad press for egregious environmental violations, and the threat of more got them to agree to allow Ooh-Mah-Nee workers to start gathering hens for rescue.

Several days into what would grow to become a four-week-long rescue mission, Ooh-Mah-Nee representatives realized the scope of the rescue was huge. They tried to get the assistance of other animal sanctuaries and called a press conference to expose the truth behind the brutal factory egg farming business. Both the Associated Press and ABC News filmed inside the facility.

Ultimately, 3,500 hens were rescued from the Buckeye Egg Farm, and are able to enjoy fresh air, solid ground, a clean environment, freedom and their natural instincts for the first time in their lives. Approximately 1,000 hens still await adoption at Ooh-Mah-Nee Farm.
