Mad Cow Furor Erupts German Cabinet
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder replaced health and agriculture
ministers Wednesday, naming new officials who will step in for
those who left over Germany's mishandling of the growing mad cow
disease crisis. With public confidence in Schroeder's government
plummeting, he said Tuesday that the crisis showed that Germany's
farm industry would have to be restructured.
"It's high time for a new course in the kind of agriculture and
food we have," Schroeder told a news conference. "We have to produce
what is healthy, not just what can be sold."
The most striking change Schroeder enacted was hiring Greens Party
co-leader Renate Kuenast to lead the fight against the spread
of the disease. Kuenast has called for bringing agriculture "close
to nature." |
