CJD may have been found in French Caribbean

Officials in the French Caribbean confirmed three cases of a brain-wasting ailment and said that one could be new variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (nvCJD) , a fatal illness linked to mad cow disease.

Two of the victims are on the island of Guadeloupe and the other is on St. Martin.

Three people in France have died from nvCJD and last week the death toll in Europe from the disease rose to over 100.

The disease can only be deetcted by a post-mortem brain biopsy.
