Safeway Supermarkets Adopts Animal Welfare Regulations
The Safeway grocery store chain has agreed to adopt more stringent animal welfare regulations after being viewing an undercover video of slaughterhouse conditions shot by PeTA. This is the first grocery store chain in U.S. history to adopt such measures.
The tape, which was made inside the Oklahoma slaughterhouse of Safeway's largest pork supplier and the country's fourth-largest pork supplier, Seaboard Farms, persuaded top brass to agree to make unannounced inspections of the facilities and adopt new industry guidelines for less cruel treatment of farmed animals. The new industry guidelines are expected to be released this June.
"I think we will give PeTA some credit for alerting us to some issues related to some suppliers," said Safeway Vice President Brian Dowling. "It's important to us, and we think they're doing a good job."
After the announcement, a planned protest on May 16 by PeTA and the Food and Social Justice Project became a "thank you" celebration instead.
