Founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, Mr. Biko was in medical school when he became increasingly involved in the struggle against the apartheid system in his country. Growing in popularity as the honorary president of the Black People's Convention, a coalition of over 70 organizations, Biko was forbidden by the South African government to make speeches or even speak to more than one person at a time, severely limiting his ability to address the political and civil rights of his fellow citizens.

Killed by police while in custody. Also inspired many freedom activists and served to put a human face on the plight of black South Africans. Became the subject of a popular song by Peter Gabriel.
