Refused to be content as another mans property

Born into slavery, Mr. Douglass eventually escaped the plantation on which he received daily beatings and began his life as an orator. He spoke of his experiences as a slave to abolitionist conventions and became a consultant to Abraham Lincoln.

Gave passionate testimonials that helped turn people away from slavery. Also was the first African-American to hold high office in the United States, when he was appointed to U.S. Minister and Counsel General to Haiti.
