Orchestrated the clandestine and illegal liberation of slaves.

Background:
Born to African slaves, Ms. Tubman was sold as a laborer at the age of five. Considered defiant and stubborn, at the age of 15 she came to the aid of a runaway slave and for this she was hit on her head with a lead weight by the plantation’s overseer. After recovering consciousness from her coma, she suffered from fainting spells for the rest of her life. In 1849, after learning that many of the slaves on her plantation were scheduled to be sold again, Ms. Tubman made the trecherous 90-mile escape past the Mason-Dixon line with the help of the Underground Railroad. After settling in Philadelphia, Ms. Tubman left her home 19 times, orchestrating the rescue of more than 300 slaves.
