After leading Gdansk shipyard workers in a strike over poor conditions, Mr. Welesa went on to become the moral centerpiece of the worker's rights movement in Poland.
A year in solitary confinement. Also recipient of Nobel Peace Prize, leader of the Polish Solidarity Movement and Poland's first democratically elected President.
