Cattle ranching is by far the greatest threat to the Amazon, and in the race to satisfy the world's gluttonous demand for eating cows, Brazilian ranchers are resorting to illegal means to keep that beef on the table. Fortunately, with the ousting of Jair Bolsonaro, there are forces in the Brazilian government that favor environmental protection over blind greed.
Mega-rancher Dirceu Kruger found this out the hard way after he leveled 13,838 acres of rainforest to turn into pasture for his cattle. He has now had all of his assets frozen and has to pay a $50 million dollar fine plus the cost of restoring the land. Hopefully, this will dissuade other villain from destroying this precious land.
