One of the leading killers of migrating birds is collisions with glass buildings in urban areas. McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago sits on the shore of Lake Michigan directly in the path of millions of migratory birds. After an episode where more that 1,000 birds died in a single day and night, the building's staff took decisive action. They covered all the glass in the building with a film imprinted with millions of polka dots, which help the birds recognize that they're about to fly into a solid object in time to avoid a collision. Since they installed this film, bird fatalities have declined by more than 95%.
