Black bears have been a protected species for years, but it seems that trophy hunters have convinced the state that there are now too many of them, so they graciously offered to kill off a few of them. The state is now issuing 187 permits to kill a total of 187 bears. Each application costs $5 and the winners of the lottery can then spend $100 ($300 if they're not from Florida) for their chance to kill their very own bear.
But enterprising animal advocates are buying as many applications as they can afford and they are asking their friends, allies and supporters to do the same. Each permit that is bought by an animal advocate is one that is off-limits to the hunters and will save the life of another bear.
