When a Marineland sea park in Canada closed its doors, the 30 beluga whales in its care needed to be transferred to different aquariums across North America. Eight of them ended up at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago in late July, 2026. By mid September, three of the eight, Rain, Peekachu and Osiris, had died.
We're not expecting that foul play was involved, and we believe that the staff at the Shedd truly care for these animals and are devastated by their loss.
We simply believe that Beluga whales and other sea mammals do not belong in captivity. They should be swimming freely with their pods, preferably in waters where they are protected from fishermen and other human predators.
