Manatees are revered in Florida, but they have been at risk of extinction for a while now. Their primary diet is the seagrass that has been growing for eons along Florida coasts. This seagrass is itself threatened by algae blooms caused by the runoff of massive amounts of pesticides and herbicides, most of which are used to grow the corn and soybeans fed to the animals we eat. Nearly 2,000 manatees died in Florida in 2021 and 2022, and while there have been great efforts to feed and protect the manatees, the incoming Federal administration is planning to eliminate many environmental protections including the ones that protect the manatees.
