Wild horses roamed through North America for 55 million years and spread across Asia and Europe before going extinct in their homeland 6,000 years ago. They were reintroduced to their native habitat by Spanish colonialists, and they have since become a heroic symbol of the American West. But they are seen as competition for grass and water by the powerful ranchers who graze their cattle across the same vast stretches of land. The Bureau of Land Management has long treated them and many other animals like wolves, coyotes, deer, elk and beavers as nuisance animals that interfere with the cattle ranchers' livelihoods. So thousands of wild horses are rounded up each year and supposedly taken places to love out their lives, but according to a recent report in The New York Times, many of these horses are now being quietly sold off to shady dealers who then sell them to places that slaughter them and use their flesh for pet food.
