In a move to protect aquatic wildlife from oil drilling, mining and other invasive human activities and also to both measure and ward off climate change, The Biden Administration, together with the Secretary for the Interior, Deb Haaland, has designated a huge swath of the California Coastline to establishing a vast Marine Sanctuary. The Sanctuary will be managed by members of the Northern Chumash Tribe.
Violet Sage Walker, chairwoman of the Northern Chumash Tribal Council, who led the campaign for the sanctuary, said, “being able to address climate change, use traditional ecological knowledge, and participate in co-management is Indigenous peoples’ contribution to saving the planet.”
