As a vegan, I don't generally don't pay a whole lot of attention to the price of eggs, but this is pretty significant even if it's not surprising. In 2022, avian flu swept through many of the US's massive egg-laying hen barns, which provided the perfect environment for the virus to quickly infect the millions of hens packed into the dark stuffy barns. Dead hens = skyrocketing egg prices.
So when the hen populations grew back to their pre-pandemic size, one might realistically expect egg prices to drop. That didn't happen though, because it doesn't factor in the greed of the egg industry executives, who saw this tragedy as a perfect excuse to increase their own personal wealth.
