More than 9 billion chickens are killed for food in the US each year. Half of these chickens are raised in the area of the country that was ravaged by Hurricane Helene. Typically, these chickens are slaughtered at just six weeks of age, but for millions of them, they didn't even live that long as their overcrowded barns were ripped apart around them.
These humongous facilities also contain vast lagoons full of millions of gallons of chicken poop, much of which was spread by the hurricane into the waterways and drinking supplies of the millions of people whose lives have already been upended by the storm.
Americans rapacious appetite for chicken flesh make tragedies like this far more common and unavoidable. Please consider limiting the chicken in your diet or eliminating it altogether.
