The world's coral reefs are some of the most diverse and delicate ecosystems on the planet. But rising ocean temperatures from climate change have caused massive damage to many of these spectacular and precious places. Recently the Philippines has designated more than 200 square miles of its coastal waters as the Panaon Island Protected Seascape. Here, vibrantly colored and dense coral reefs teem with schools of juvenile fish, sea turtles, sea anemones and other marine life. Thanks to this new protection, this area is now off-limits to fishing and with limits to tourism.
Scientists have identified about 80 similarly healthy coral reef systems around the world and are urging other governments to take similar action.
