The common belief among archeologists is that our early human ancestors developed their big brains by eating a diet centered around lots of red meat. But a new study published in the Journal of Archaeological Research, suggests that this trope is more fiction than fact. Instead, researchers suggest that processed plant foods played an important part in the early human diet, and helped us survive and thrive across shifting global climates. Artifacts and other research suggests that our ancestors were grinding wild seeds, pounding and cooking starchy tubers and detoxifying bitter nuts thousands of generations earlier than previously believed
