Many wild animals, from whales to orangutans, have rights (mostly the right to existence in the form of protections in the form of having their habitat destroyed). But stingless bees in Peru are the first insect to receive such a distinction. Stingless bees have been living harmoniously with Indigenous Peruvians for millennia, but they now face dangers from habitat loss, climate change and invasive insects and their populations have been shrinking. Now biologists and environmental activists can argue in court on their behalf.
