The Chandeleur Islands form a 50-mile long arc 30 miles off the easternmost coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. These islands form an important barrier that protect the Louisiana Coast from storm surges. They are also home to many species of birds, and the vast seagrass ecosystem surrounding the islands is a major nesting ground for different species of sea turtles and fish. The twin catastrophes of Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill nearly destroyed the islands, but recovery efforts and natural events are joining forces to bring them back. Right now, Louisiana’s Dept. of Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority has a plan in place to protect these important islands and is in the process of securing the funds to make it happen.
