During the height of the avian flu epidemic, when tens of millions of American chickens died on their overcrowded industrial farms and egg prices shot through the roof, several large egg producers conspired to raise prices even higher, generating almost $200 million in profits even as they received millions of dollars in subsidies for compensation of the chickens who died. The members of this "egg mafia" now have to pay a total of $3.3 million for price fixing – a tiny pittance that is certainly not enough to dissuade them from committing the same crimes in the future.
