Beavers are some of the most amazing animals on the planet. Since they first arrived more than 30 million years ago, they have transformed the environment around them by chewing down small trees and using the lumber to build dams that turn tiny streams into ponds that serve as community watering holes for the local animals, breeding grounds for fish and birds and eventually become wonderfully complex ecosystems that are homes for a wide variety of plants and animals.
For decades, people saw beavers as pests, and destroyed their dams and killed the beavers for their fur. The lands suffered greatly by their loss.
Eventually, conservationists realized that beavers were actually far more skilled at land management than people are. Now beavers have been introduced into many degraded areas, and they have turned them into beautiful landscapes in just a few years. If we're ever going to restore the land from all damage we have done to it, we're going to need every beaver we can get.
