Today is the most important election day during my lifetime. The last one was desperately important, but this one is even more so. You can tell by the image who we have decided we're both voting for.
Every time we post anything political, we get a slew of angry comments and unsubscribes from people telling us to "stay in our lane," which I assume means we should just post about vegan soups (by the way, we just did a great post about just that.) But in posting this, we are driving right down the center of our lane, even if we are honking as loudly as possible. Her opponent wants to shut down the Environmental Protection Agency and give free reign to the oil companies, factory farms and other polluters and planetary villains to destroy our land, our biodiversity, our air, our water – and rapidly exacerbate climate change, leaving all future generations in deep peril. He and his henchmen want to strip all women of control over their own bodies, their own families and their own careers, leaving them under the thumb of the fathers, husbands and other men in the lives. They want to take away the rights of LGBTQ+ people to love who they love and the rights of trans people to exist at all. They want to make life a living hell for everyone who is not white and Christian, and to call for the mass exile or incarceration of nonwhite immigrants and the arrest and imprisonment of their political enemies and anyone who disagrees with their draconian policies. I wish I was exaggerating here, but these are all things Harris' opponent has promised repeatedly and his cohorts have extensively detailed in a 900-page book.
By contrast, Harris wants to work for the benefit of all Americans, preserve and expand the social safety net, protect our health and ensure the agency and bodily and social autonomy for everyone, to direct resources to environmental preservation, to help everyone get a better education, better jobs, and more secure livelihoods.
From the beginning, our mission and commitment at Vegan Street is to help build a healthier, most compassionate, more just and more sustainable community, society, planet and future. This IS our lane. And this morning we will walk into our polling place and vote for the people who come the closest to sharing our vision. And we encourage you to do the same.
