The capitalist libertarian mindset has so thoroughly embedded itself in modern American culture that many people believe that our lands, waters and skies have no value beyond what man can profit from it. If a rancher encroaches into the wolves' territory and the wolves follow their instincts and hunt the cattle, then the wolves must be destroyed even though the cows are raised to be slaughtered anyway. If a farmer decides to dump tons of toxic pesticides on the crops he is growing to feed the animals he is raising to slaughter and those pesticides kill all the birds, fish and butterflies in the area, then that is just the cost of progress. And if a hiker decides to wander into a natural area that has supported all of its inhabitants for thousands of generations and one of these inhabitants follow their instinct and attack these interlopers, then we must destroy all of the ones defending their homes, even though the visitors surely should have understood the risks they were taking by traveling there.
The capitalist mind believes that everything on Earth belongs to whoever is brazen enough to claim it. It is up to those of us who believe that nature exists for its own sake to stand up to these greedy people and fight to defend our forests, prairies, rivers, oceans and all our beautiful natural spaces.
