In the millennia before people began domesticating animals, there were many times more wild animals than there are now. Now, the 1.4 billion cattle,1 million pigs, 1 million sheep, 55+ billion chickens and more that a billion animals raised for food have a combined weight more that 22 times greater than all the elephants, bears, moose, lions and the the thousands of other species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians with whom we share this planet.
