It's a tale worthy of its own miniseries. After the Spix's macaw was poached into extinction, a former poacher and some questionable bird collectors ultimately worked with governments, scientists and environmental activists to find captive birds who were able to breed with suitable mates and be transferred to a giant aviary in Brazil and eventually introduced into the native home in the Caatinga dry forest. Now the first eight Spix's macaws are flying through their native lands and dozens more will be released into the wild in the coming months and years.
