Being vegan is the best single thing anyone can do to protect the planet, but even that is not always enough. Just as the beef industry is the primary cause of the rapid destruction of the Amazon rainforest, the rainforests of Indonesia are being clearcut to make room for palm oil plantations. Palm oil became popular as animal-based lard fell out of favor with hundreds of food companies, and while we welcomed the switch at the time, palm oil production is causing massive loss of habitat for orangutans and many other vital species. When you see palm oil listed as an ingredient (and we know that, as a vegan , you have to read a lot of ingredient panels), please consider selecting a different brand. Better yet, let the palm oil-using companies know that you don't approve of their use of palm oil as an ingredient.
