A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences details how air pollution from animal farms (particularly industrial-scale farms) is prematurely taking the lives of thousands of people in the United States, particularly people living in rural areas and small towns near these giant operations. Gases associated with manure and animal feed produce small, lung-irritating particles capable of drifting hundreds of miles. Yet, while pollution from power plants, factories and vehicles is restricted under the Clean Air Act, there is less regulation of air quality around farms. This is yet another reason why it is essential to move beyond eating animals.
