A Spanish seafood company called Nueva Pescanova wants to exploit and mass murder yet another animal species by convincing people to eat it, and they have proposed building a massive industrial farm in the Canary Islands that would slaughter a million octopuses each year, which they see as their first salvo in their quest to put octopus on millions of plates.
Octopuses are highly intelligent creatures with a unique complex nervous system, capable of advanced problem-solving and learning. And raising them in crowded captivity would not only be unimaginably cruel, but would also create an environmental nightmare.
Worldwide resistance to this diabolical plan has been swift and furious. In the US, an octopus farming ban has passed both houses of Congress in Washington State and is simply awaiting the expected governor's signature. Similar bans are working their way though California and Hawaii.
There is also a massive global effort to stop the proposed animal factory in the Canary Islands. You can aid this effort by visiting this page from the Aquatic Life Institute.
