The moon is a pretty big place. It's bigger than the planet Mercury or the dwarf planet Pluto. Its surface area (14.6 million square miles) is also greater than the total land mass of Africa (11.73 million square miles) or North America (9.54 million square miles). Yet, unbelievably, it is not as big as the amount of the Earth's land that is used to raise, graze and feed the animals we eat (14.76 million square miles). Yet these animals produce less than one-fifth of the nutrition we would receive if we converted that land to grow food to feed people directly.
Our main source for this meme is globalagriculture.org Additional statistics come from the Geneva Graduate Institute and several basic Google searches for landmass Some of it was also our own math: Total global arable land 5.34 million square miles x .33 used to feed animals = 1.76 million square miles Total ice free land on Earth 50,193,280 sq miles x .26 used to graze animals = 13 million square miles Total land to raise, graze or feed animals: 1.76 + 13 million square miles = 14.76 million square miles
