There are a great many people out there who are uncomfortable with animal suffering, but they still want to eat animals. For them, the industry has developed a whole series of reassuring bromides using terms like "humane", "free-range", "cage-free", "grass-fed", etc., etc. to put their consumers' minds at ease. The fact remains, though, that every single animal that ends up on your plate is someone who didn't want to die, and even the most "humanely" raised among them are still considered property and treated accordingly without any agency to determine their own future. There are many wonderful foods out there that don't involve animal cruelty, but none of them are products of the animal industry.
