One of the greatest of the many environmental problems caused by animal agriculture is that the vast amount of manure and urine produced by all the animals. When combined, they form ammonia, which is a major air and water pollutant. Like several other European nations, the Netherlands are becoming overwhelmed with the foul stuff, and they now feel they have to take steps to address it. So they have put together a plan to reduce livestock herds by a third by setting up a series of initiatives to financially encourage farmers to reduce the number of animals in their care or move on to different careers altogether.
