The state of North Carolina is home to 2,400 pig farms, each with a monstrous waste lagoon attached. Anyone who lives within a mile or two of one of these faces air quality that is bad enough to trigger asthma and other health effects. Also, the awful smell is enough to make it almost impossible to stay outside. Most of the people who live near these lagoons are poor people of color who lack the political resources to stand up to these agricultural behemoths. Anyone who eats pork is contributing to this nightmare.
