The three most famous horse races in the US are the Preakness, the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, collectively known as the Triple Crown. This year, the lead up to all three races led to fatalities – a total of 15 horses. This is in addition to the hundreds of horses who die violently in horse racing and training each year. All sports involving animals are throwbacks to a much more violent and less enlightened era, and none of them have a place in the 21st century. It is time to put an end to the cruel sport of horse racing.
