We have been working for years to end animal testing, and the government of Canada has just brought these efforts one step closer to fruition. Bill S5, which sets forth a path to move all chemical toxicity testing from animals to computer models and other technological processes, has just passed the Senate, been given royal assent and appears to be on the way to becoming a law.
According to Charu Chandrasekera, the scientist who is the mastermind behind the bill, "Fortunately, the world is witnessing a global shift, embracing a versatile toolbox full of 21st-century technologies like organ-on-a-chip, 3D bioprinted tissue, and computational models to emulate human biology in a petri dish."
Currently, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, pigs and primates are used in chemical safety testing, but Canada has taken a step to end these cruel experiments forever.
