The brutal Soviet dictator Josef Stalin has been often quoted as saying "A Single Death is a Tragedy; a Million Deaths is a Statistic." He was talking about the process of starving the Ukrainians whose food was absconded to feed the Russians.
Nearly a hundred years later, the billions of chickens, pigs, cattle and other animals who are tightly confined, tortured, often disfigured and ultimately mechanically slaughtered are the deathly "statistic" of our age. In our eyes, though, each one of their deaths is a tragedy – and an easily preventable tragedy at that. If one matters, than certainly all matter. Please widen your circle of compassion. No lives deserve to become just a statistic.
