When the medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle decided to use live pigs as "patients" for surgical students, a lot of students were understandably upset and several of them complained to the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a a national nonprofit with more than 17,000 doctor members. PCRM stepped in, demonstrated why this program was such a horrible idea and showed some more effective (and infinitely less cruel) alternatives. The University finally relented and the program was scrapped. This is just one more step in our march toward a healthier, more compassionate and more sustainable world.
