Climate change is no longer some sort of future scenario. It is an urgent problem that is affecting millions of people now, and most of the world's governments are placing the desires of wealthy major polluters over the desperate needs of their own citizens.
Now, some of these citizens are fighting back in a huge way. Nine years ago in Switzerland, a group of more than 2000 senior women, most of them in their 70s came together under the name of KlimaSeniorinnen (Senior Women for Climate Protection) and launched a lawsuit against the Swiss Government claiming that their human rights were being violated since they are not able leave their homes and can suffer attacks to their health during heatwaves in Switzerland.
Now the European Court of Human Rights has ruled in favor of the women, which will force the Swiss government to better enforce the climate standards and adopt stricter ones. It also opens the door for anyone in the 46-member European Union to sue their own governments for failing to sufficiently address the climate crisis.
