Pine martens were once common denizens of the English and Welsh forested countryside. But decades of hunting and habitat destruction left the cat-sized creatures on the edge of extinction. But now efforts to bring them back into their native ecosystems have gotten a major boost as the National Lottery Heritage Fund has given a £1.2 million grant to The Two Moors Pine Marten Project.
This money will fund a project to release 40 pine martens into the forests where they once thrived. The new immigrants will be selected from healthy pine marten populations in Scotland.
The project will also include an ambitious community engagement project where people will be given the chance to become nature spotters, monitoring pine marten behaviour and other woodland wildlife.
Every time people are involved in building and maintaining native ecosystems, I feel a little more hope for the world. Our source for the meme the BBC.
