The US government gives massive subsidies to the meat, dairy and egg industries, as well as those who grow the corn and soybeans that are used to feed these animals. Without the subsidies, those products would be far more expensive and people would be compelled to eat less of them. The giant agribusiness companies use these handouts primarily to pad their own pockets and keep farmers dependent on them. Meanwhile the people who grow the food that actually feeds people get far less help from the government.
Imagine if the government properly funded those who are providing the rich, nutritious vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes that provide the vast majority of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that sustain us. Produce costs would plummet, and with cheaper costs those who are growing and innovating the foods of the future would massively flourish. Meanwhile, there would be far, far fewer greenhouse gases exacerbating the climate crisis and far fewer rainforests, prairies and other lands being destroyed to raise or feed animals. The world would be a cleaner and less threatened place.
Fortunately, the World Bank has been able to imagine this, and they produced a strategic framework on food production's impact on climate change by encouraging the production of plant-based foods that cause much lower emissions. The report reads, “High-income countries should decrease consumer demand for emissions-intensive, animal-source foods by fully pricing environmental and health externalities, repurposing subsidies, and promoting sustainable food options.”
We couldn't have said it better ourselves.
