Climate change is a huge existential problem, but it is certainly not the only one. Many parts of the world including much of the Western United States are facing debilitating water shortages, there are entire major ecosystems including the Amazon rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef in danger of imminent collapse and vast water systems including the Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico suffocating from massive toxic algae blooms. Meanwhile, thousands of animal and plant species have gone extinct and dozens more dying out every single day, and massive pandemics are killing off millions of birds, mammals and humans.
Every single one of these problems and many, many more are greatly exacerbated by one single industry – the animal agriculture industry – that breeds and kills the tens of billions of animals we consume each year.
In short, our addiction to eating animals is greatly harming the planet and more urgently bringing about the demise of the human species. And the vast majority of the people living in the wealthier countries are actively contributing to this demise every single day.
It doesn't have to be that way. There is no practical reason why we need to eat animals. Everyone who does is simply following traditions, habits and conditioning. Every person who switches to a vegan diet will massively reduce their negative ecological footprint, and even by greatly reducing your consumption of animal products, you are extending the existence of the human race. Please consider the lives of your yet-to-be-born grandchildren and their children and grandchildren when you decide the food to be put on your plate.
