Most people are either unaware or only vaguely away of the worst pandemic devastating the world right now (despite ourbestefforts to draw attention to it). H5N1 avian flu has either outright killed or caused to be culled nearly a half billion captive birds (mostly chickens also geese, ducks and other birds destined to become our food), plus millions of wild birds, mammals and sea mammals. This number is almost unimaginable, and the consequences, including the potential of this or a similar strain crossing over into the human population, are potentially dire indeed. And yet..
That number, as impossibly huge as it is, is completely dwarfed by the estimated 70 BILLION chickens and other birds that suffer for the six short weeks of their lives before being mechanically murdered on the way to our dinner plates. Those 70 billion birds are the most significant motivations for the creation and continuation of Vegan Street, and the reason why a hen has served as our mascot for all of the nearly 25 years of our existence.
