Raising and killing the 70 billion land animals that people consume each year is one of the leading causes of the climate crisis, and many scientists believe that a worldwide shift to a vegan diet, as unlikely as that will happen without some massive intervention, would be enough to save humanity. Even the 50% reduction suggested by a new report published in Nature Communications seems wildly unlikely, but each of us has the ability to control what types of food we consume, and every time someone replaces animal products with plant-based ones, we are a tiny bit closer to protecting our future generations.
