Our planet is home to 1.6 billion cattle, plus about a billion sheep and a billion goats. They combine to eat unimaginable amounts of grasses and grains, of which 12% escapes their bodies (through burps and farts) in the form of methane – a powerful greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. There is virtually no regulation surrounding these gases anywhere in the world, and few people beyond the vegans and a too slowly growing group of environmentalists are even seriously discussing the vast impact that animal agriculture has on our desperate climate crisis. Simply put, if everyone quit eating animals, climate change would easily be brought under control.
