According to a new report published in Nature Sustainability, there is a very real possibility that the Amazon rainforest could completely collapse within the next 50 to 70 years if not sooner, along with as much as 20% of the world's ecosystems, thanks to the climate crisis, the rapid level of extinctions, the loss of biodiversity and several other manmade factors.
There is still a window to prevent or at least slow this, but it is closing fast. Much of the solution will depend on bold actions from governments and corporations, and we all really need to push them on that. But the leading cause of habitat destruction and one of the leading causes of climate change is the world's addiction to meat and animal products, and mitigating that is something each of us can do. If we could persuade a global shift toward a plant-based diet (something Vegan Street has been working to do for the last 25 years), our children and their children will have a much better chance of surviving and perhaps even preventing this cataclysm.
